How To Cut an Avocado

It can be a bit confusing when you first get an avocado and you can’t figure out how to cut an avocado.

It’s funny you might first think an avocado is a vegetable but the truth is actually they are berries.

In this post, I provide images with all the steps and also a video that also makes the entire process easy to understand.

How to Cut An Avocado Instructions

Follow these steps to create slices and cubes. The process can be easy to follow step by step.

We will first wash, then remove the outer part of the avocado to then get into the best part of the delicious green inside.

Wash

Washing an avocado can be a little tricky seeing the outside texture of the avocado. Some would just wash it with water.

I prefer to use Dr. Bronner’s soap which is safe for washing vegetables. It is important to get all the soap and residual off.

If the berries are not organic and even some organic can carry pesticides and chemicals on the avocados.

Wash the avocados with soap or at the very least water and then wipe them down.

Cut in half

Now that the avocado was washed and dry cut the avocado directly through the center of the avocado.

As the knife is in the center of the avocado, twist the avocado around the knife to cut it entirely. this will give you two halves.

Remove the seed

Grab one of the two halves and hold it in one hand with the seed facing out. Take the knife and lightly strike the see with the knife.

This will stick into the seed so you can now pull it back out and the seed will pull out of the rest of the avocado.

It is important to be very careful with the knife. A safe way would be to hold the avocado in your hand with a towel.

To remove the seed from the towel it will be easier and safer to take the slimy seed off the knife with a towel.

Remove the green flesh

Now that the seed is removed yes it is not a nut we can go ahead and cut the halves to remove the green flesh or we can scoop it out with a spoon. I will show you both ways to do this.

I have an entire post on how to peel an avocado that goes a little deeper than the steps I’m going to give you below.

Spoon

The spoon trick is a great way to remove the good part of an avocado. It really helps if the avocado is ripe.

Take a large spoon and slide it into one of the halves of the avocado. Keep it as close as you can to the outer layer that’s harder.

As you work it around the avocado it will remove the entire inside.

Peel

Another option is to cut the halves of the avocado into sections. Four slices per half make it easy to remove the outside layer.

After you have cut these slices grab the outside and remove it, that’s it and how easy it is.

A huge benefit of this method is that you tend to keep all of the good parts of the avocado.

Cut Avocado into cubes

If you did the spoon trick then all your going to need to do is slice the avocado into sections the long way.

After they sliced the long way you can now directly cut across the avocado to create little cubes of avocado.

Cut Avocado into slices

If you removed the outer layer already you are good and should already have your slices. If you need them to be thinner then lightly cut through the avocado so that you do not mush it.

The riper the avocado the easier it is to make a mess of the slices and cubes.

What is an Avocado

Avocado is a fruit that is native to Central America. Avocados are rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Avocados are also a good source of fiber and are low in cholesterol.

The avocado tree is native to Mexico and Guatemala, but it is now grown in most subtropical countries where it has been introduced.

Avocados can be eaten raw or cooked, and they can be used as an ingredient in dips, salads, spreads, sandwiches, and other dishes.

How To Store An Avocado

Avocados are a healthy and delicious food, but they don’t always stay fresh for long. This can be frustrating when you want to enjoy them later on.

Here are some tips on how to store an avocado so that it will last longer.

  • Place the avocado in the fridge.
  • Leave the pit in the fruit, or remove it if you prefer.
  • Place the avocado in a sealed container with a layer of lime juice or lemon juice to keep it from browning too quickly.

Wrap the container tightly with plastic wrap, and place it in the fridge where it will stay fresh for up to two weeks after being cut open!

FAQ

Using a towel will make cutting an avocado easier to cut. The problem is that the avocado is round and this can cause issues trying to hold it steady when you’re trying to cut it with a knife.

No, it is much easier to slice an avocado when the skin is still on that avocado. If you’re cutting it really thin then you will need to peel before you slice the avocado.

First, wash the avocado. Now slice it in half and remove the seed from the avocado. Slice the halves multiple times and then peel the avocado.

Now chop all these slices into smaller pieces so that you can mix them in a bowl and make guacamole
