Step 1: Wash the radishes

This probably goes without saying but it is important to give these radishes a wash before you start cutting them.

When you cut them you will be introducing what is on the outside of the radish into the flesh of the radish.

Radishes are root vegetables and they are covered with the dirt that they were growing in. When you are washing them make sure the radishes have not gone bad.

Step 2: Sharpen the knife

When cutting a radish you want to make sure you have a sharp knife. These little spheres will roll all over the place and you want to make sure that you can cut through them with ease.

There are a lot of varieties of radishes that you can cut these ways.

Step 3: Cut the ends off

Being that these are root vegetables you are going to have a root end and the stem of the vegetable.

Cut them off as close as you can to save the most you can out of this little radish.

Step 4: Make a small slice on the side

I like to make a small slice on the side, this gives the radish some stability when you go to cut it.

You could always place it on the cut side of the root or stem end but I like to see the round sphere of the radish.

Step 5: Cut into Slices

Now that you have some stability to this little vegetable go ahead and cut across the radish to make nice little circles. You can make them as thick or as thin as you wish. I like to cut them in the 1/8″ to 1/4″ range.

After you are done cutting your radishes, I have an entire post on how to store radishes that you should check out.

Frequently Asked Questions For Cutting Radishes

The steps above are a great way to cut radishes for a salad. People tend to like to slice them thinner rather than thicker seeing that they will not be cooked.

If you do slice them thicker it will give your salad some crunch that you might be looking for. One thing to think about is the amount of flavor of a thicker cut of radish and it might overpower that bite.

If you have cut off the stem and root then you want to store them in your fridge in a tightly sealed container to keep the moisture inside. Some people like to add a damp paper towel inside the container to help keep it moist.

If you have left the stem and root end still on then just keep them in the crisping drawer of your fridge until you are ready to use them.

You first want to follow the steps above and then you want to put the radishes on their sliced side and then slice them into 1/8″ slices and you will get your little matchsticks with the red color on the side.
